The Blue Trail System was established in 1929, and by the 1940 edition had 14 trails, totaling around 500 miles. Today, the Blue Trail System is over 825 Miles, part of which has now been established as part of the 215 mile New England National Scenic Trail.
We recently scored a copy of the CT Walk Book from May, 1940. It's been fun to look through, especially comparing some of the trails we've done recently with the same trail 73 years ago. For example, we just passed "Tipping Rock" on the Tunxis Trail and while "Tipping Rock" is still there, the rock no longer actually tips. :) The 1940 CT Walk book was small enough to toss into your backpack. The Blue Trail System has grown enough that the 19th edition (current) is enough to fill two ring-bound volumes. Even if you have the most recent copy of the CT Walk Book you should always check the CFPA website to look for trail change and closure notices.
