We started our hike at Notch Road inside the Mt. Greylock Reservation, and took the Appalachian Trail up to the Summit of Mt. Williams 2,951 ft (899 m), Over Mt. Fitch 3,110 ft (948 m), then to Mt. Greylock 3,491 ft (1,064 m).
You really can't go wrong with a hike on the Appalachian and this one definitely didn't disappoint. We passed a number of thru-hikers (both north-bounders and south-bounders) and a few day-hikers. The trails were active, but not so busy as to lose their peacefulness like often happens in other places on the Appalachian Trail (around Bear Mountain and Lions Head in CT for example).
It was another warm, and characteristically humid, New England Day, so it was pretty hot walking up-hill all morning. The cool mountain breeze was a welcome respite, and what we had to look forward to on the way back was mostly down-hill. So, since we were hot, tired, hungry, and making good time, we decided to take advantage of the restaurant at the summit. We don't often get a restaurant at the summit of mountains, so why not. The cheeseburgers are excellent, btw. :)
Happy Trails, Hike On...
