CT Walk Book Pg. 331
Unfortunately there were also a large number of mosquitoes and black flies as well.
It was cool, but humid, and since much of the trail is in between the caves and overhangs airflow was lacking. It ended up being unexpectedly hot and uncomfortable. I'd highly recommend this hike on a cool day, but not so much when there's risk of ice as the steep area's could become pretty slippery and dangerous.
The one important thing we didn't really notice on our way in was that all morning we were basically hiking downhill, there were some big uphills but a lot of downhill as well. The terrain was actually pretty rugged and we noticed that we were both pretty tired by the time we got to Crane's Lookout.
(If you haven't visited the Leatherman's Cave on the Mattatuck it's only about 50 yards away from Crane's Lookout and it's definitely worth a visit. We didn't because we had just been a couple months back when we did the Mattatuck.)
On the way back we started realizing just exactly how much downhill we had hiked on the way in. Of course, it was all uphill now! I definitely have to recommend a good, long, rest at Crane's Lookout, because most of the hike out is up, up, up, with a few steep downs.
